RIP Martin Wirth, murdered in a shootout with police who were trying to evict him. 2 deputies were injured and one was killed. About a month ago, Martin stated that the police wanted him dead and described being beaten and threatened. The news is regurgitating the usual bullshit that he shot first, but anyone who knew him knows he would never open fire unprovoked. He was all about non-violent resistance. He was very politically active and even ran for state Senate as the Green Party candidate. He was known for his anti-government views and was a vocal member of Occupy Denver. He spoke out against the death penalty, war, the abuse of our homeless population, and police violence, which put a big fat target on his back. As a member of the community, he was a model of peace and compassion. As my friend, he was one of the kindest people I’ve ever known. He drove to Denver all the way from Bailey on short notice to help me move out of the place I was living with Virginia, and he offered to look after my cat during all that drama. When he commented on my pictures, he wouldn’t say I looked pretty. He’d say I looked happy. He was always supportive when I was going through a hard time and he could always make me feel good about myself with a single comment. He was caring, genuine, easy-going, and he lived to help others, including animals. He didn’t have a judgmental bone in his body. His death is a loss for all of us. The media is portraying him as a radical extremist and a dangerous loner, which couldn’t be further from the truth. He was well-known and well-loved and there is simply no way he fired first. I don’t know what happened but it stretches the imagination to believe he would suddenly go against his very nature and everything he has ever stood for. My friend was murdered, plain and simple, and now he’s being slandered. This is what happens when the government treats peaceful dissent like terrorism. RIP, Martin. You deserved so much more from this life.       http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_29557457/park-county-bailey-martin-wirth-opposed-death-penalty       https://vimeo.com/156881205
